If you’re looking for a European destination that feels untouched, affordable, and surprisingly family-friendly, Montenegro deserves a place on your list.
When we visited Montenegro in April as a family, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I had seen the dramatic mountains and beautiful coastline online, but I wondered whether there would actually be enough to keep two young children engaged.
After spending time exploring the country, the answer was easy.
Yes, Montenegro is absolutely worth visiting with kids.
What surprised us most wasn’t a single attraction or activity. It was how easy it felt to slow down as a family. We spent less time rushing between tourist sites and more time enjoying nature, playing outside, and simply being together.
Our Favorite Part: Kolašin
While many travelers headstraight to Kotor or Budva, our favorite memories came from northern Montenegro.
Kolašin completely surprised us.
Surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, and traditional villages, it feels like the authentic side of Montenegro that many visitors never experience. If your family enjoys nature and getting off the typical tourist trail, don’t skip this part of the country.
We visited in early April, and while the scenery was beautiful, there was still quite a bit of snow on the mountains. Because of that, some of the experiences we were most excited about, like ATV tours and horseback riding, weren’t operating yet.
If I were planning the trip again, I’d choose late April or even May to experience Kolašin at its best. By then, the snow has usually melted enough for more outdoor activities to open while the landscapes are still lush and green. There’s so much to do here beyond skiing, and it’s one of the most authentic places we visited in Montenegro.
Staying at Swissôtel Resort Kolašin

The resort became much more than simply a place to sleep. It became part of our experience.

One of the things we loved most about Montenegro was how much variety there is for families.

One of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests, Biogradska Gora is filled with easy walking trails, beautiful lake views, and plenty of opportunities for children to connect with nature.
Book an Adventure with North Tour Montenegro
If you’re staying in Kolašin, I highly recommend booking an experience with North Tour Montenegro.
They offer a wide variety of outdoor adventures, making it easy to experience the best of northern Montenegro. Depending on the season, you can choose from ATV tours, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, scenic jeep tours, and even authentic dining experiences with a local family in a mountain village.

Ride the K7 Cable Car
The K7 gondola offers incredible views over the Bjelasica mountains. During the warmer months, families can enjoy hiking trails, mountain restaurants, and outdoor activities at the top. Open from May depending on weather.
Wander Through Kotor Old Town
Walking through Kotor’s narrow stone streets feels like stepping into a storybook. Kids will love exploring the hidden alleyways while parents can enjoy the history and waterfront views.
Stay in Herceg Novi
While many visitors choose Budva as their coastal base, we actually preferred Herceg Novi.
We found it much more relaxed and family-friendly, with crystal-clear water, beautiful beaches, and a charming promenade that was perfect for evening walks. We spent time with local families along Pet Danica Promenade, where our girls loved stopping at the trampolines and playgrounds with swings along the waterfront. Those little moments made exploring the town just as enjoyable for them as sightseeing.
Herceg Novi also makes an excellent base for day trips to Kotor, Perast, and the rest of the Bay of Kotor while offering a quieter atmosphere at the end of the day.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Adriatic Sea is surprisingly cold during spring. The water typically begins warming up around late June, making summer and early autumn the best times if swimming is a priority.
Is Montenegro Expensive?
One of the things I loved most about Montenegro is that it works for almost every budget.
If you’re looking for an affordable European family vacation, it’s very easy to explore Montenegro without spending a fortune. Accommodation, restaurants, parking, and many activities are generally more affordable than in neighboring countries, making it an excellent value for families.
At the same time, Montenegro has firmly established itself as a luxury destination. When Is the Best Time to Visit Montenegro?
If I were planning this trip again, I’d choose one of these three windows:
Late April to May
Perfect for exploring northern Montenegro, with comfortable temperatures, lush landscapes, and outdoor activities like ATV tours and horseback riding back in full swing.
Early June
My top recommendation if you want to combine the mountains with the Adriatic coast. You’ll enjoy warm weather, smaller crowds, and beautiful conditions before the peak summer season.
September
Another fantastic option, with warm sea temperatures, comfortable weather, and a much quieter atmosphere after the summer rush.
Things to Know Before You Go
Our trip in April was wonderfully quiet, and I think that’s one of the reasons we fell in love with Montenegro.
If you have flexibility with your travel dates, I’d actually avoid visiting during the height of summer.
July and August are Montenegro’s busiest months, particularly along the coast. Beaches, towns like Kotor and Budva, and many popular attractions become significantly more crowded.
One thing many visitors don’t realize is that Montenegro’s airports, especially Tivat Airport, are relatively small and weren’t built to handle the huge number of summer visitors. Long queues for check-in, security, passport control, and baggage claim are common during peak season.
If I were planning this trip again, I’d choose:

- Early June or September if you want to combine the mountains with Montenegro’s beautiful coastline.
Traveling during these shoulder seasons means you’ll enjoy:

Final Thoughts
Montenegro may not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a European family vacation, but that’s exactly what makes it special.
It offers dramatic mountain landscapes, beautiful coastline, charming old towns, and authentic experiences without feeling overrun by tourism.
If we were planning the trip again, we’d split our time between Kolašin for its incredible nature and Herceg Novi for a relaxing beach stay. Together, they gave us two completely different sides of Montenegro, and both quickly became family favorites.
If your family enjoys nature, scenic road trips, slower travel, and discovering places before they become overcrowded, Montenegro is absolutely worth adding to your list.
